Matthew Brown (b. 1997) is a composer/lyricist, music director, and baritone based in Washington, D.C. Equally at home in the theatrical and concert spheres, his compositions range from full-length musicals to single-movement chamber works. He recently completed his Master of Music degree at The Catholic University of America (CUA), where he premiered his evening-length opera Abel, served as Composer-in-Residence with the CUA Symphony Orchestra, and led laboratory sections of Ear Training I-IV as a Teaching Assistant. He has received commissions from the Theater departments of both CUA and Pomona College. As a music director, Matthew has worked on several theatrical projects, and he particularly enjoys music directing new musicals in development. Matthew is also an experienced vocalist in both solo and choral contexts, and he currently serves as a staff singer at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Capitol Hill. Alongside his work as a musician, Matthew also has a robust background in arts administration and is Assistant Manager of Donor Services at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. His principal teachers in Composition are Andrew Earle Simpson at CUA and Tom Flaherty at Pomona College, where Matthew received his Bachelor of Arts in Music. He is a proud member of ASCAP and the Dramatists Guild.
